Morbid manga master Junji Ito`s (Tomie, Uzumaki) putrid and surreal story of bio-mechanical fart-propelled mutant zombie fish that sprout legs and attack Japan is the most insane anime to come out of Japan since UROTSUKIDOJI: LEGEND OF THE OVERFIEND. Based on Ito`s Gyo--The Death Stench Creeps and directed by Takayuki Hirao (FUTAKOI ALTERNATIVE), GYO: TOKYO FISH ATTACK (??, 2012) will be released on DVD in the United Kingdom by Terracotta Distribution. The movie recently had a successful screening in London at the "Terror Cotta Horror movie marathon" -- part of the Terracotta Festival in association with Film Four Frightfest. GYO also made its New York Premiere last month during the New York Asian Film Festival and Japan Cuts. A devastating, disgusting "Death Stench" spreads across Japan, connected to creatures that appear to be bizarre and aggressive mutant fish with scuttling, sharp metal legs. The country is soon invaded by these ferocious fish that leaving the ocean and head to the cities, hell-bent on death and destruction! When Okinawa is overrun by these dangerous, disgusting and disturbing walking fish, Kaori loses contact with her boyfriend. Amidst the carnage, Kaori embarks on a desperate quest to find him before he is lost to the mayhem that is sweeping the land. She heads to Tokyo, only to find that the metropolis has been taken over by bigger and bigger killer fish.
As she battles her way through the ruined city -- now an urban war zone -- things get weirder and even more dangerous. Facing four legged killer sharks, machine-driven squid and the myriad dangers of Tokyo, Kaori must find the truth behind these mechanical monsters and face an evil greater than she ever could have imagined... leading to a finale that must be seen to be believed! Director Takayuki Hirao learned his craft as an anime director under the guidance of PAPRIKA director Satashi Kon. While in his early twenties, Hirao was entrusted to direct the first episode of Kon’s first and only series, the critically acclaimed PARANOIA AGENT. Hirao has carved out a name for himself in the past decade as one of the young anime directors to watch out for, becoming known for his over the top action scenes and intense camerawork -- most notably in massively successful DEATH NOTE animated series.
