Anime distributor AnimEigo and parent company MediaOCD have licensed the anime classic NOBODY'S BOY REMI (家なき子, Ie-naki Ko, 1977-78) from TMS Entertainment. Based on Hector Malot's 1878 novel, Nobody's Boy (Sans Famille), this 51 episode series tells the story of a boy who's life in the French countryside is shattered when he discovers he is actually not his parents' son. Forced to leave home, Remi searches for his real family.
NOBODY'S BOY REMI is considered among the best works from director Osamu Dezaki (TOMORROW'S JOE, DEAR BROTHER, LADY OSCAR: THE ROSE OF VERSAILLES, and SPACE ADVENTURE COBRA). AnimEigo also describes the series as "DARK AS HELL. It's one of the saddest, most traumatizing depictions of childhood ever animated. But it's also hopeful, beautiful, surreal, and a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit."
With that in mind, its no surprise that NOBODY'S BOY REMI will be the inaugural title in AnimEigo's new "Ruined Childhood" product line. There's no English dub for the series, but since it takes place in France, AnimEigo managed to get permission to include the French dub along with the original Japanese audio and English subitles.
NOBODY'S BOY REMI will be coming to full HD Blu-ray in 2025. More details to revealed in the new year.
