The Long Delayed CD Box Set to be Released at Last Author: John “Dutch” DeSentis with Robert Saint John Source: Ark Soundtrack Square, Masao Iwase Blog Special Thanks to Keith Aiken, Ed Godziszewski, and Larry Tuczynski’s Godzilla Monster Music Website
Back in 2004, amidst the hysteria that was Godzilla’s 50th Anniversary, it was announced that Toho Music would re-release the Godzilla soundtrack series in six special edition boxes loaded with extras such as alternate cues, dialog from the movies, and several bonus discs. The first of these GODZILLA SOUNDTRACK PERFECT COLLECTIONs hit the streets in October that year and the second set followed in December. Strangely, there was quite a delay on the third set as it did not see release until April of 2005. Little did collectors know that the delay of the third box would be nothing compared to the wait they would endure for the next. Now, after nearly a year and a half, the long delayed fourth box is finally set to be released on October 20, 2006. So what caused the big delay? The last eighteen months have been filled with fan speculation as to what exactly was going on with the sets. Ark Soundtrack Square (the exclusive provider of the box sets) originally announced that GODZILLA SOUNDTRACK PERFECT COLLECTION BOX FOUR was being released in August 2005, then in the “next month”, and eventually on some indefinite date “soon”. After a while, some fans began to just shrug off the news. After all, a year and a half is a long time. Rumors circulated that rights issues had led to the delays. Another factor could have been that, despite the limited run of each set (only 1,954 copies of each set were produced), the first three are still readily available which might point to signs of poor sales. That coupled with the weak business and merchandise sales from GODZILLA: FINAL WARS might have signaled that the company was going to cut their losses and end the sets.
Finally, the official word came out to set the record straight. It was reported that Toho Music had chosen to focus on the WAR HISTORY OF MEN: TOHO WAR MOVIES SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION release from last December. Also music producer Masao Iwase (GUNHED, GODZILLA VS BIOLLANTE) revealed on his blog that he was putting a lot of extra work into GODZILLA SOUNDTRACK PERFECT COLLECTION BOX FOUR. Whatever the case, fans can now rejoice as it looks certain that this new street date for the fourth set is official.
So what is in store for fans with this fourth box? This set will be the most content filled set yet with a total of nine discs. The soundtrack to GODZILLA (aka THE RETURN OF GODZILLA, 1984) contains sixty three tracks, eight tracks more than the original 1993 Futureland release. Fans of that score can look forward to a multitude of previously unreleased alternate cues. GODZILLA VS BIOLLANTE has been completely redone and remixed. Disc one of this soundtrack will contain nineteen tracks with three of them being Akira Ifukube cues from the album OSTINATO. This is obviously two tracks shorter than the 1993 issue but it is presumed that all the music is presented within the many suites. The second disc will contain music edited as it appeared in the film. The reason for this grand treatment of the GODZILLA VS BIOLLANTE score is that Masao Iwase wanted to go the extra mile with the score. The booklet for this soundtrack may also include new interviews. GODZILLA VS KING GHIDORAH will contain fifty nine tracks with two previously unreleased. GODZILLA VS MOTHRA (aka GODZILLA AND MOTHRA: THE BATTLE FOR EARTH, 1992) is another double disc set. Disc one will contain fifty three tracks with two previously unreleased. Disc two is a bit odd as it contains more tracks from GODZILLA (1984) mixed in with extra material from GODZILLA VS MOTHRA. Most of the tracks on this disc comprise the GODZILLA SINGLES COLLECTION: 1984-1992 which has assorted pop songs like “Godzilla’s Love Theme” performed by The Star Sisters (which appeared during the end credits of the 1984 movie) and several Mothra related songs.
The first two bonus discs in the set are called KING OF MONSTERS: GODZILLA. This set is actually a re-release of material previously available on LP, much in the same manner as the previous bonus discs. The first CD contains some assorted vocal songs with non-vocal versions as added bonuses. These songs include “Go Go Godzilla”, “Punch Punch”, “Attack Gigan!”, and “Bride of Godzilla”. Many of these have also appeared on the GODZILLA SONG COLLECTION LP and CD. There are fourteen tracks total. The second disc seems to be some kind of children’s drama; each track of which runs about thirteen minutes long. There are reportedly some ZONE FIGHTER themes on that disc as well. The last bonus disc is the complete ZONE FIGHTER themes across eighteen tracks. Despite having much more material than the first three sets, the price of this set will remain consistent. At $99.50, the price of each box is more than fair. Each of the sets comes housed in a sturdy box which contains all the discs and some nice paperwork. The artwork for each individual disc is very nicely done with a close up shot of Godzilla’s face on each booklet cover and pictures of the films composers and female stars adorning the other art. Whether you are a staunch music collector or merely a casual fan of the music, these sets are worth every penny. The sound quality and re-master work on each disc brings out orchestral sounds that previous issues lacked. Each set can be ordered from Ark Soundtrack Square.
