GODZILLA dominated the market at #1, beating MALEFICENT (4th week in Japan) by 70% and three new Japanese releases -- EIGHT RANGER 2, TIME TRIP APP and STILL THE WATER. The final numbers give GODZILLA the second-highest opening for a live-action film in Japan, behind MALEFICENT. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ GODZILLA. After opening in 3,952 theaters on May 16th, the numbers had fallen to a low of 303 locations by the July 11-13 weekend. But this weekend saw a slight expansion to 326 as GODZILLA began the transition from first-run cinemas to secondary and "discount" theaters where it will finish out its run before the Blu-ray and DVD release on September 16th. The uptick in theaters also led to higher ticket sales. GODZILLA earned $515,187 for the July 18-20 weekend, more than double what the film made the previous weekend, and has finally crossed $199 million domestically. One of the primary reasons is that Korea has forbidden the inflow of Japanese popular culture until 1998, which hindered timely, constant releases of the Godzilla series. The other is that giant monster movies are not that popular in the country (Shim Hyung-rae’s DRAGON WARS, which was a great hit in 2007, is a completely different story). Those two reasons have resulted in such low awareness and mass appeal to giant monster movies in general in the peninsular.
