In 1978, Hanna-Barbera Productions created the first cartoon series based on Toho Co., Ltd.’s character Godzilla. The GODZILLA show followed the adventures of the research vessel Calico; Captain Carl Majors (voiced by Jeff David), scientist Dr. Quinn Darian (Brenda Thompson), her young nephew Pete (Al Eisenmann), first mate Brock (Hilly Hicks), and Godzooky, the “comical, cowardly cousin” of Godzilla. Each week the crew of the Calico would find themselves in one predicament after another, only to be rescued in the nick of time by Godzilla, King of the Monsters. GODZILLA premiered on the NBC television network on September 9, 1978. It ran for two seasons of 13 episodes each and a third season of reruns with the final NBC broadcast on September 5, 1981. Rights to the series reverted to Toho in 2003. Classic Media licensed the show from Toho in 2005 and released the first two DVD volumes on June 6, 2006. The previous DVDs featured four episodes apiece, but Volume 3 includes five episodes to complete the first season of GODZILLA: 9: THE MAGNETIC TERROR (Original Air Date: 11/11/78) The Magnetic Monster, a giant turtle-like creature, attacks an oil rig in Antarctica. Dr. Darian determines that the monster is feeding off magnetic energy and growing larger and larger. When the Magnetic Monster swallows a mini-sub piloted by Captain Majors and Brock, Godzilla races to the rescue but is overmatched by a foe that dwarfs him in size. 10: ISLAND OF LOST SHIPS (Original Air Date: 11/4/78) The Calico is lured to an uncharted island by the Sirens of Greek legend. The crew discovers that the island only appears on Earth for one day every 1000 years. They attempt to escape, but are stopped by the Sirens and the giant monster Chimera. Even Godzilla succumbs to the Sirens’ hypnotic song. Can Pete and Godzooky find a way to awaken Godzilla and get off the island before time runs out? 11: THE BREEDER BEAST (Original Air Date: 11/18/78) Pollution in Chesapeake Bay spawns a large monster amoeba that feeds on metal. Dr. Darian suspects that the creature may be a living nuclear bomb. Godzilla and the National Guard have to stop this Breeder Beast from destroying the US mint without causing it to explode. 12: THE SUB-ZERO TERROR (Original Air Date: 11/25/78) In the Himalayas, the crew of the Calico find a lost tribe of intelligent bigfoot creatures living in a dormant volcano. The creatures are planning to conquer the world with an army of giant Abominable Snowmen. To save mankind, Godzilla must battle the Great Watchuka, the biggest snowman of all. 13: THE TIME DRAGONS (Original Air Date: 12/2/78) A time warp throws Godzilla and the Calico back to the prehistoric age. The crew of the Calico befriend a tribe of cavemen and contend with hungry dinosaurs. Godzilla faces off with a gigantic Tyrannosaurus rex while Dr. Quinn and Capt. Majors try to find a way back to their own time. GODZILLA: THE ORIGINAL ANIMATED SERIES VOL. 3 runs 113 minutes. Each episode is in the original 1.33:1 TV aspect ratio and has been digitally remastered. The English soundtrack is presented in 2.0 Dolby Digital. The suggested retail price is $7.93. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ For more information on Hanna-Barbera`s GODZILLA cartoon and the first two DVD collections from Classic Media, please see the earlier coverage here on SciFi Japan:
