After a failed attempt by Japan`s public broadcaster NHK to bring DOCTOR WHO to the country in 2006, and a few scattered airings on satellite and web video services, Japan has spent almost a decade waiting to catch up with the BBC`s hit sci-fi series. Last year DOCTOR WHO celebrated it`s 50th anniversary with a special feature-length episode, THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR, which was broadcast simultaneously in 75 countries around the world. Although the episode failed to find a broadcaster in Japan, Japanese fans were instead treated to subtitled episodes of earlier seasons for the first time via the online video subscription service Hulu. Now DOCTOR WHO is now receiving a full-fledged relaunch on DVD in Japan featuring a new Japanese voice cast.
The new releases will begin with Series 5 featuring Matt Smith`s Eleventh Doctor. The show is being rebranded for Japan as DOCTOR WHO: NEW GENERATION (??????? ????????????, Dokutaa fuu nyuu genereeshon), with rentals starting from September 5th 2014 and sales beginning October 3rd. DVD releases of Series 6 will follow at the end of the year, with Series 7 coming in early 2015. The new voice cast for the TARDIS team in Japan includes Tokuyoshi Kawashima (????) as The Doctor (Matt Smith), Kana Uetake (????) as Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), and Yoshiki Nakajima (?????) as Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill). All three actors are members of the voice talent management firm 81produce.
