Distributor SRS Cinema has licensed the independent sci-fi film THE iDol for release in North America. Shot entirely in Japan by writer/director Norman England, THE iDol is the story of Ken (Jin Sasaki), a young office worker who has a sweet tooth for figure collecting. On a visit to a local toy collectors shop he acquires a seemingly rare alien action figure that is actually a creature of extraterrestrial origin, In no time Ken’s life is turned inside out as the somewhat silly looking alien alters his life by benevolently giving him everything he has ever dreamed of before callously taking it all back! Both in front of and behind the cameras, THE iDol features a number of familiar faces from Japanese monster and horror films, including Yukijiro Hotaru (Gamera Trilogy, REIGO; KING OF THE SEA MONSTERS), Takako Fuji (JU-ON, THE GRUDGE), Tomoo Haraguchi (Gamera Trilogy, DEATH KAPPA), Kow Otani (Gamera Trilogy, GMK) and Hajime Matsumoto (THE RING, GMK). Full details have yet to be announced, but expect THE iDol to be released on Blu-ray (and possibly VHS) later this year. Check the SRS Cinema website for updates in the coming months.
