Tsuburaya Productions Co., Ltd. has provided SciFi Japan with information and photos for ULTRAMAN ARCHIVES ULTRA Q UHD & MovieNEX (ULTRAMAN ARCHIVES ????Q UHD & MovieNEX), their upcoming 10-disc Japanese Blu-ray box set presenting all 28 episodes of the classic series on Blu-ray and in 4K UHD. Part of the company`s ULTRAMAN ARCHIVES (????????????) Project that looks back at key episodes of the Ultraman Series through home video, public events, and deluxe merchandising, the set also offers the episodes plus exclusive bonus video and text content on the TSUBURAYA MovieNEX streaming service. For this set, the original 35mm negatives were scanned to 4K data, a process that took 3 days for each episode. Approximately 1 million frames were exhaustively checked for damage, and the necessary restoration was performed. The end result is a stunning HDR (high-dynamic-range imaging) presentation that offers visual that are closer to range of the human eye. The details of the monster`s skin and the miniature sets, the mysterious light of the monster`s eyes, the darkness of the aliens, and the gradation of the sunrise are now displayed in a quality never before seen. At the same time, too much clarity can run contrary to the aims of the original creative team. Therefore, the restoration staff worked with consideration for the original filmmakers, and the ULTRA Q 4K UHD balances the 1966 production with the latest technology. The key bonus feature is the "Premium Talk," a collection of interviews offering viewpoints and commentary from ULTRA Q staffers and outside experts.
