Following their successful "Godzilla Day" anniversary screening of director Masaaki Tezuka's GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA (ゴジラ×メカゴジラ, Gojira × Mekagojira, 2002) last November 3rd, Toho Co., Ltd. and Fathom Events are partnering once again to bring the direct sequel, GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS (ゴジラ×モスラ×メカゴジラ 東京SOS, Gojira x Mosura x Mekagojira Tōkyō Esu Ō Esu, 2003), to cinemas across the United States on Wednesday, March 22nd. In addition to the main feature, this screening will include the computer animated short film, GODZILLA VS. GIGAN REX (ゴジラ VS ガイガンレクス, Gojira VS Gaigan Rekusu), that premiered during Toho's 2022 Godzilla Day Festival in Tokyo.
Like GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA, GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS was part of the "Millennium Series" of Godzilla films produced from 1999-2004 which offered alternate takes on the mythos, using only the original 1954 movie as a springboard. In this film, Mothra's twin fairies appear with a warning to Japan... Kiryu (aka Mechagodzilla) must be put to rest at the bottom of the ocean or face the wrath of Mothra. When Godzilla returns once again, will humanity heed the warning or will Kiryu be forced to fight against two monsters?
While this will be the first wide screening of GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS in American theaters, news reports claiming that this will be "the first time ever in US cinemas" for fans to see the film are a bit misleading. Toho's International office in Los Angeles began offering GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS for theatrical bookings in North America as far back as 2004, with the film's U.S. theatrical premiere taking place on June 25, 2004 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood as part of the American Cinematheque's "Godzilla's 50th Anniversary Celebration" (with director Masaaki Tezuka in attendance). The premiere was followed by additional screenings around the country that year, including that July during G-Fest at the Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge, Illinois, September 9th during the "They Came from Toho: Godzilla and the Kaiju Eiga" festival hosted by the Film Forum in New York City, and Bay Area Film Event's "Godzillafest" screening at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco on November 21st. In the years since, GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS has been screened at a handful of repertory cinemas and events.
Now fans will have a chance to see the film at more than 450 theaters across the United States. Tickets are on sale now, so visit the official website for additional information, locate a theater near you and get your tickets!
