A re-cap of this weekend’s notable performers as reported by their respective distributors
■ Notable North American Openers:
Warner Bros. opened SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY in 3,965 theaters and slam-dunked a number one $31.65 million debut, the biggest for a family film in North America of the Pandemic era and obviously scored big with parents and their families.
Sony’s PG-13 thriller ESCAPE ROOM: TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS opened with $8.8 million in 2,815 locations for a PTA of $3,126.
Focus Feature’s enjoyed an excellent debut for their documentary ROADRUNNER: A FILM ABOUT ANTHONY BOURDAIN that posted an impressive $1.9 million this weekend in 927 locations for a PTA of $2,050.
Neon released PIG in 552 locations and grabbed a Top 10 spot with a weekend gross of $945,000 for a PTA of $1,712.
■ Notable Holdovers in North America:
In its second weekend, in the second spotDisney’s release of Marvel’s BLACK WIDOW grabbed up $26.251 million in 4,275 locations for a North American cume through Sunday of $132.0 million and an equally impressive international cume of $132.0M for a global total to date of $264 million.Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow) who confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises.
Racing into a fourth-place finish in its fourth weekend,Universal’s F9 domestically revved up $7.62M for a North American cume of $154.839 million through Sunday.
Rounding out the Top 5,Universal’s release of DreamWorks Animation’s THE BOSS BABY: FAMILY BUSINESS now in its third weekend grossed $4.72 millionfor a North American cume of $44.642 million through Sunday.
Warner Bros.’ SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY opened internationally with $23.011M and when combined with its North American debut of $31.65M brought in $54.661M in 65 total markets.The international weekend cume of $23.0m on 11,724 screens in 63 markets occurred amid new COVID restrictions in various markets as well as nice weather across Europe.
Columbia Pictures’ ESCAPE ROOM: TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS took in $3.4 million internationally this weekend from 2,400+ screens in 18 markets for an overseas cume of $4.5 million.South Korea opened to $1 million, and the Middle East debuted to $900K. Australia’s cume now stands at $1 million after its third weekend in release. Upcoming key market releases: Spain (July 30), France (August 11), Germany (August 19), Brazil (August 26), Mexico (August 26), and Russia (October 7).
■ Notable International Performers:
Disney release of Marvel’s BLACK WIDOW” now in its second weekend took in $29.9M in 48 material territories and when combined with its North American weekend gross of $26.3M had a global weekend of $56.2M and has now earned $264M globally to date.
Universal Pictures’ F9 has a total weekend estimate of $28.648M from 57 territories in release, for an International cume of $436.432M and pushing the global grosses to $591.271M through Sunday.
Warner Bros.’ TOKYO REVENGERS grossed another ¥443.8m ($4.0m) on 351 screens, with a fantastic -36% drop and ranking #2 behind the opening of another local title. The total market cume is now ¥1.5b ($13.5m).
Sony Pictures International’s release of Columbia Pictures’ PETER RABBIT 2: THE RUNAWAY” took in $2.6 million this weekend, down 43% in 39 markets with 3,000+ screens for an international cume of $106 million. Upcoming key market releases: Brazil (August 26), and South Korea (October 7).
THE CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT generated an estimated $2.4M this weekend from 58 markets taking the overseas total to $124.5M and the global running cume is now $189.1M.There are 7 markets left to release including Japan on 1-Oct.
Disney’s release of Pixar’s LUCA now in week 5 is still in 13 international territories earning $1.3M this weekend for an international cume to date of $23.7M.
Paramount’s A QUIET PLACE PART II grossed $1.2M this weekend in 44 markets.There are 3 new openings this week and the international cume is now $130.6M. The holdover markets dropped 60% from last weekend. The markets that have released to date represent 87% of the international rollout. In like for like markets, the overall cume result is 7% ahead of A QUIET PLACE.There are a further 11 markets left to open including Brazil set to release on July 22.
Universal’s THE FOREVER PURGE opened in 10 new markets including UK ($1.1M) and Spain ($0.8M) for a worldwide weekend of $7.856M and a global cume to date of $48.412M.
Warner Bros.’ GODZILLA VS. KONG has a total international cume for $362.6M and the worldwide total now stands at $463.2M.
Universal’s THE BOSS BABY: FAMILY BUSINESS now has an international cume of $3.7M and a global cume to date of $48.3M.
■ IMAX Highlights (courtesy of IMAX):
IMAX surpasses $100m in Local Language box office for 2021.
Fresh from its Cannes premiere earlier this week, Toho’s BELLE helps IMAX cross $100m Local Language box office for a calendar year.This marks only the 2nd time ever that IMAX has eclipsed the $100m threshold, and with 5 months remaining in the year, the 2019 IMAX local language box office record of $134m is within striking distance.
Acclaimed filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda’s stunning animated feature, BELLE, delivers $780k from 38 x screens in Japan, a per screen average of over $20K,becoming the latest successful Japanese language movie released in the IMAX format in 2021.
Also helping drive this milestone, Bona’s CHINESE DOCTORS adds $2m to its IMAX total, which now stands at $5.5m and counting.
Marvel/Disney’s BLACK WIDOW storms past $17.2m in IMAX global Box Office this weekend. With a further $1.8m from theDomestic sophomore frame (394 runs), the IMAX cume in North America crosses $10m. 248 x International IMAX engagements add $1.4m, to reach an Int’l cume of $7m.
Universal’s FAST 9 adds $875k this weekend, driving the IMAX cume to $37m. This includes the strongest opening weekend since January 2020 (BAD BOYS FOR LIFE) for IMAX screens in Germany, as well as the best IMAX opening since TENET across the network in France.
Next week, the slate continues to heat up as Paramount’s SNAKE EYES begins its theatrical run in North America and select International Markets, with Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE and Warner Bros/DC’s THE SUICIDE SQUAD following in quick succession across the next few weeks.
