    A re-cap of this weekend’s notable performers as reported by their respective distributors. Please note this weekend’s overall total estimated 3-day Domestic box office is $64.5M and YTD 2024 (estimated at $2.006B through Sunday) is down 21% vs. 2023.

    ■ Notable Domestic Openers

    • Amazon MGM Studio’s critically acclaimed CHALLENGERS opened at number one taking in $15,011,078 in 3,477 theatres for a PTA of $4,317. Warner Bros. reports the international running cume now stands at $10.0M and including the domestic debut this weekend, the global running cume is currently $25.0M. From famed director Luca Guadagnino (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME) comes the story of Tashi (Zendaya), a tennis player turned coach, has taken her husband, Art (Mike Faist -- WEST SIDE STORY), and transformed him from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a 'Challenger' event -- close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour -- where he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick (Josh O'Connor -- GOD'S OWN COUNTRY): his former best friend and Tashi's former boyfriend. Tensions run high on and off the court as old flames are reignited, competition builds, and love and careers hang in the balance; it's anyone's game.
    • In the second spot, Lionsgate’s UNSUNG HERO earned $7.75 million in its debut this weekend in 2,832 locations for a PTA of $2,737. The film is the latest successful collaboration from Kingdom Story Company and Lionsgate following last year’s hit JESUS REVOLUTION and the companies’ most recent release ORDINARY ANGELS.  When David Smallbone's successful music company collapses, he moves his family from Australia to the States, searching for a brighter future. With nothing more than their seven children, suitcases, and their love of music, David (for KING + COUNTRY's Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives. Based on a remarkable true story, Helen's faith stands against all odds and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs. With their own dreams on hold, David and Helen begin to realize the musical prowess in their children, who would go on to become two of the most successful acts in Inspirational Music history: five-time Grammy Award-winning artists for KING + COUNTRY and Rebecca St. James.
    • Rounding out the Top 10, is Roadside Attractions’ BOY KILLS WORLD that debuted in 1,993 theatres for a weekend debut of $1,675,475 for a PTA of $841.  A dystopian fever dream action film that follows Boy, a deaf mute with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, he is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death. The film stars Michelle Dockery, Bill Skarsgård, Jessica Rothe, Famke Janssen, Sharlto Copley, Brett Gelman, Isaiah Mustafa, Andrew Koji and is directed by Moritz Mohr.
    • “In Space No One Can Hear You Scream” - The 45th Anniversary rerelease of 1979’s ALIEN posted a $1.563 million weekend in 1,750 locations for a PTA of $893. The seminal 20th Century favorite received glowing PostTrak scores: 5/5 stars w/ 92% “Positive” and 87% “Excellent.” The feature was preceded by a 9-minute interview – in support of the upcoming theatrical release of ALIEN: ROMULUS between producer Ridley Scott and director Fede Álvarez.
    • IFC opened HUMANE opened this weekend in 56 theatres to a debut of $25,756 for a PTA of $460. The R-rated suspense film directed by Caitlin Cronenberg tells the story of what happens when a global environmental collapse forces world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce earth's population.

     

    ■ Notable Domestic Holdovers

    • In the 3rd spot, Warner Bros.’ GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE now in weekend 5 in 3,312 theatres added another $7.2 million this weekend for a PTA of $2,174 and a domestic cume through Sunday of $181,680,032. The worldwide total is now $519.3M through Sunday. Directed by Adam Wingard, this latest entry in the MonsterVerse franchise follows up the explosive showdown of GODZILLA VS. KONG with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence -- and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever. The film stars Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, Alex Ferns, Brian Tyree Henry, Fala Chen & Kaylee Hottle.
    • In 4th, A24’s CIVIL WAR now in weekend 3 in 3,518 theatres earned $7,004,038 for a PTA of $1,991 and a domestic cume through Sunday of $56,194,933. The R-rated action drama directed by Alex Garland (EX MACHINA) portrays a journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons, Sonoya Mizuno & Stephen McKinley Henderson.
    • Rounding out the Top 5, Universal’s R-rated horror film ABIGAIL now in weekend 2 scared up $5.25 million in 3,393 locations for a PTA of $1,547 and a domestic cume through Sunday of $18,787,755. The film now has a global cume of $28.638 million. fter a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they're locked inside with no normal little girl. From Radio Silence--the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett behind the terrifying modern horror hits READY OR NOT, 2022's SCREAM and last year's SCREAM VI--comes a brash, blood-thirsty new vision of the vampire flick, written by Stephen Shields (THE HOLE IN THE GROUND, ZOMBIE BASHERS) and Guy Busick (Scream franchise, READY OR NOT). Abigail stars Melissa Barrera (Scream franchise, IN THE HEIGHTS) and Stevens (GASLIT, LEGION).

     

    ■ Notable Expansions

    • SPC’s WE GROWN NOW now in weekend 2 added 331 locations (for a total of 340) earning $126,122 for a PTA of $371 and a domestic cume through Sunday of $170,776. In 1992 Chicago, as Michael Jordan solidifies himself as a champion, a story of two young legends in their own right begins. As wide-eyed and imaginative best friends Malik and Eric traverse the city, looking to escape the mundaneness of school and the hardships of growing up in public housing, their unbreakable bond is challenged when tragedy shakes their community just as they are learning to fly. The PG-rated drama stars Blake Cameron James, Gian Knight Ramirez, Jurnee Smollett and is directed by Minhal Baig.
    • Neon reports STRESS POSITIONS now in weekend 2 added 14 theatres (for a total of 15) earning $26,743 for a PTA of $1,783 and a domestic cume through Sunday of $63.033. This comedy film tells the story of Terry Goon (John Early) who is keeping strict quarantine in his ex-husband’s Brooklyn brownstone while caring for his nephew Bahlul, a 19-year-old model from Morocco, bedridden after an electric scooter accident. Unfortunately for Terry, everyone in his life wants to meet the model. The whole pack of them - including his reckless and outspoken best friend Karla (played by director/writer Theda Hammel) - descend on the dilapidated house, crowding the model, breaking Terry’s cherished rules, and putting his barely formed political convictions to the test.

    A $6M Global Box Office Weekend for IMAX!

    • Legendary/Warner Bros.’ DUNE PART TWO enjoys its final weekend on the IMAX Global Network, earning $1.2M and taking its IMAX cume to $145M. It’s the 7th Highest Grossing IMAX title all-time at the Global, Domestic, and International box office.
    • MGM’s CHALLENGERS launches to $1.2M from a shared IMAX showtime schedule in North America.
    • Universal’s THE FALL GUY begins its global rollout early in numerous International markets, earning $565K from 130 IMAX screens in 34 markets. THE FALL GUY adds 685 IMAX screens in 46 markets this week, including North America, UK, France, India, South Korea, Mexico, and Brazil.
    • In South Korea, ABO Entertainment’s THE ROUNDUP: PUNISHMENT opens to $770K from only 24 screens ($32K per screen!), becoming the 3rd HIghest IMAX opening ever for a local title in South Korea
    • Legendary/Warner Bros.’ GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE adds $700K, taking the IMAX cume to a sizeable $41.1M.
    • On Wednesday, IMAX audiences in North America were treated to a special, one-night re-release of A24’s HEREDITARY, earning $420K from 320 Domestic IMAX screens. A24’s CIVIL WAR reaches an IMAX cume of $9.8m, earning another $550K this weekend.
    • In addition to the global release of Universal’s THE FALL GUY, the Spring holiday finds numerous new releases in China, including Alibaba’s FORMED POLICE UNIT, Lian Ray’s TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN, Road Pictures’ SPY X FAMILY CODE: WHITE, and releasing in theatres for the first time in China, Hayao Miyazaki’s 2004 classic, HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, distributed locally by Maoyan.

    • South Korean title THE ROUNDUP: PUNISHMENT opened in 6 international territories to a debut weekend of $24,361,240 to top the global chart this weekend for an international cume of $24.599 million. Plot: While pursuing the developer of a drug trafficking app, Detective Ma Seok-do uncovers a deadly link to a vast online gambling syndicate, triggering an unprecedented alliance to take down the masterminds.
    • Warner Bros. reports grosses for CHALLENGERS generated an estimated $9.0M for the weekend on 6,344 screens from 52 international markets in release. The holdover drop from last weekend’s release in Australia and New Zealand was a superb -21%, with Australia specifically holding remarkably strong at -20%. The international running cume now stands at $10.0M. Including the domestic debut this weekend, the global running cume is currently $25.0M. Another 12 markets open next week including Belgium and Holland, with Japan being the final market to open on June 7th. CHALLENGERS is an Amazon MGM Studios title distributed internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures.
    • Universal reports THE FALL GUY began its rollout in its first 38 markets this weekend, including Australia, Spain and the Netherlands. Collectively, these markets opened with $8.651M, above THE LOST CITY and just off BULLET TRAIN in the same markets excl. previews.
    • Lionsgate’s UNSUNG HERO rounds out the global Top 10 with its domestic gross of $7.75 million in its debut this weekend.
     
     

    Notable Global Holdovers

    • Warner Bros.’ GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE  crosses the $500 million mark worldwide! The hit film produced an estimated $14.9M this weekend on 36,754 screens in 78 overseas markets. This represents a very good -45% holdover drop and brings the international cume to $337.7M. The worldwide total is now $519.3M through Sunday. The film is distributed by Legendary East in China and TOHO in Japan.
    • Universal reports KUNG FU PANDA 4 added $11.7M this weekend across our 82 international markets, reaching a cume of $318.5M through Sunday. Performance Ex China is in line with ZOOTOPIA and above HTTYD3 and KFP2 at the same point. Reported IBO Ex China has surpassed KUNG FU PANDA 3 and SING 2. Kung Fu Panda is the No.2 highest-grossing DreamWorks franchise worldwide and internationally (behind Shrek). The film crossed $500M WW this weekend.
    • A24’s CIVIL WAR added $15,102,038 this weekend globally for a worldwide cume to date of $86,217,173. 
    • Columbia Pictures’ GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE earned $5.0 million this weekend from 5,500+ screens in 60 markets for an overseas cume of $80.6 million and a global total of $188.0 million. Upcoming key market releases: Saudi Arabia (2-May), United Arab Emirates (2-May).
    • Universal reports ABIGAIL opened in 3 further markets this weekend for a total of 65 international in-release markets. The weekend added $2.6M for a cume through Sunday of $9.9M, in line with READY OR NOT at the same point. Our openers made up $0.2M of this, performing above NIGHT SWIM. The global weekend total is $28.638 million.
    • Japanese title “DETECTIVE CONAN: THE MILLION-DOLLAR PENTAGRAM added another $7,870,900 this weekend for a global cume to date of $55.693 million. The film is a Japanese animated mystery film directed by Chika Nagaoka. It is the twenty-seventh installment of the Case Closed film series based on the manga series of the same name by Gosho Aoyama, preceded by BLACK IRON SUBMARINE in 2023.
    • Crunchyroll/Sony Pictures’ SPY x FAMILY CODE: WHITE earned $4.5 million worldwide this weekend from 33 markets (including North America), bringing its total global Sony Pictures gross to $12.0 million. The film made $3.4 million overseas this weekend, bringing its total international cume from Sony Pictures territories to $5.0 million. Mexico led all new openers with $820K, followed by Germany with $800K.
    • Warner Bros. reports DUNE: PART TWO crosses $700M worldwide! The epic hit film grossed an estimated $3.0M from 69 overseas markets, bringing the international cume to date to an outstanding $424.5m and the worldwide total now stands at a phenomenal $704.3M through Sunday. IMAX global grosses earned $1.2M this weekend, taking the IMAX worldwide cume to $145M. It’s the 7th Highest Grossing IMAX title of All-Time at the Global, Domestic, and International box office. DUNE: PART TWO is distributed by Legendary East in China.
    • Universal reports BACK TO BLACK added $1.1M this weekend from 31 UPI markets, reaching a cume of $4.6M. Performance in these markets is well above PRISCILLA and WHITNEY HOUSTON: I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY and almost 3x JUDY at the same point.
    • Disney reports their release of 20th Century Studios’  THE FIRST OMEN has grossed an estimated $50.2M globally ($19.2M Domestic and $31.0M International). Internationally, THE FIRST OMEN held by -51%. Significant markets showing strong holds include Spain (-17%), Argentina (-28%), France (-39%) and Mexico (-42%). 
    • Universal reports MONKEY MAN opened in the Middle East and Denmark this weekend. 33 international UPI markets added $0.8M this weekend to reach a cume through Sunday of $7.8M, performing just off Nobody at the same point. The film now has a global cume of $31.741 million.
    • Universal reports OPPENHEIMER added $0.4M this weekend, driven by Japan (Wknd 5). The film has reached an international total of $642.3M and now has a global cume of $972.178 million!
