On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year-old, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400-year-old "halfling." Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts. When she is sent onto an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization she works for, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil patriarch of all vampires. Using her superhman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. Renowned producers Bill Kong (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON; HERO) and Abel Nahmias (11 COMMANDMENTS, LA BEUZE) teamed up with director Chris Nahon (KISS OF THE DRAGON) on this English language vampire slaying adventure, where the hope of the world rests in the hands of a beautiful young woman. It is adapted from a popular anime film of the same title which was produced by Production I.G. (GHOST IN THE SHELL, KILL BILL VOl. 1) and Aniplex, and directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (who was the key animator for Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA). The new live action movie was created by an international partnership that includes East Wing Holdings Corp., Pathé, the Hong Kong-based EDKO Film, the French production company SAJ, and cooperation and support from Production I.G. BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE is being released theatrically in the United States by Samuel Goldwyn Films. For more on the film, please see the BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE Production Notes here on SciFi Japan. Friday, September 25th- Friday, October 2nd EVANGELION: 1.0 YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE (2007) Official Movie Site: Evangelion 1.0
In the aftermath of the "Second Impact", all that remains of Japan is Tokyo-3, a city that`s being attacked by gigantic creatures called Angels that seek to eradicate humankind. After not seeing his father Gendo for more than eight years, Shinji Ikari receives a phone call, in which he is told to urgently come to the underground headquarters of NERV, an organization that deals with the destruction of the Angels through the use of giant humanoid weapons systems called Evangelions. Shinji`s objective is to pilot the mech Eva Unit 01 while teaming up with the Eva Unit 00 pilot, Rei Ayanami. EVANGELION: 1.0 YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE is the first of four new "Rebuild of Evangelion" films based on the sci-fi animated series blockbuster NEON GENESIS EVANGELION (also written and directed by Hideaki Anno) which aired on Japanese television in the mid 1990`s. Anno and the creative staff of this film made a complete rebuild of the design and visuals rather than magnifying the original 16 mm film from the series. The team was also able to employ 3D computer graphics to enrich the depth and breadth of the Evangelion world as well as digital photography and composite nonlinear editing. EVANGELION: 1.0 YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE is being released theatrically in the United States by FUNimation Entertainment. Saturday, September 26th The Silver Scream Spook Show Presents RODAN (English dubbed version, 1957) Official Event Site: Silver Scream Spook Show
A mining crew in Kyushu digs too deep and awakens monstrous insects... and something even larger and more terrifying. The team behind the original GODZILLA (including producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, director Ishiro Honda, co-writer Takeo Murata, FX director Eiji Tsuburaya, and composer Akira Ifukube) reunited for Toho`s first color monster movie, which was a box office success in both Japan and the U.S. Rodan became one of Toho`s most popular creations, with the studio ranking the flying monster as one of their "Big Five Kaiju" alongside Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla. RODAN will be shown as part of the latest Silver Scream Spook Show, a monthly event at the Plaza featuring live stage shows and 35mm prints of classic monster movies. Previous Spook Shows have featured such movies as KING KONG, MOTHRA, BRIDE OF THE MONSTER, IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, GODZILLA VS THE SEA MONSTER, and INFRA-MAN. The RODAN screening is particularly interesting since the US offices of Toho Co., Ltd. do not own a subtitled or dubbed 35mm print of the film. Therefore, Atlanta resident Sean Linkenback (author of the excellent Unauthorized Guide to Godzilla Collectibles) turned to Japanese Giants editor Ed Godziszewski, producer of the documentary BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE as well as audio commentaries and extras for several Godzilla and Toho kaiju DVDs such as the new ICONS OF SCI-FI: TOHO COLLECTION. Ed is graciously loaning the Plaza Theatre a rare, original IB Technicolor print of RODAN for free (all booking fees go to Toho), so if you`re anywhere near Atlanta be sure to attend the Silver Scream Spook Show because it will likely be your only chance to see RODAN in 35mm on the big screen! The 1:00pm Kids Matinee of RODAN has free admission for everyone 12 and under, with Adult tickets for $7.00. Tickets to the 10:00pm evening show are $10.00 each.
