Sony Pictures Entertainment has co-produced and co-financed, with Studio Chizu and Nippon Television Network Corporation, the long-awaited new film from director Mamoru Hosoda (MIRAI, BELLE, WOLF CHILDREN, SUMMER WARS), his first in four years, SCARLET (果てしなきスカーレット, Hateshinaki Sukāretto). Toho will distribute the film theatrically in Japan, and SPE will distribute it worldwide. SCARLET will open in Japan on November 21 and in the United States on December 12, 2025.
At a press conference for the film, Steven O'Dell, President of SPE International Distribution, stated, "SCARLET is a work that combines all the greatness of cinema. The original story spun by Director Hosoda makes SCARLET a movie that can be delivered to the whole world. This work has epic action, a great adventure, and at the core of the story is a very powerful, heart-shaking human drama."
"The movie is scheduled to be released in the winter of 2025. It was also the time when [Hayao Miyazaki's] THE BOY AND THE HERON was released in the United States and, after the big success of that film, I am convinced that it is the best time of year for this one. Sony Pictures also plans to release it in countries and regions such as the Latin America, Europe, Asia (excluding Japan), the Middle East, and Africa. We strongly believe that people all over the world will want to see this movie."
