Classic Media Reissues the Original GODZILLA on DVD

Days before the theatrical release of the new GODZILLA from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, the original Toho classic GODZILLA (???, Gojira, 1954) -- along with the Americanized edit GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (1956) -- will be reissued on DVD by Classic Media. In 2000, Classic Media bought the film libraries of United Productions of America and Golden Books, which included the North American rights to several of Toho`s Godzilla films plus RODAN and WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS. Classic Media renewed the license directly with Toho in 2005 and began work on DVDs featuring both the US and Japanese versions of the films as well as bonus features such as audio commentaries and trailers. The first of these new releases was GOJIRA, a 2-disc set pairing the Japanese GODZILLA with GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. In 2011, Classic Media sub-licensed GODZILLA and GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS to The Criterion Collection. Criterion digitally restored the films for deluxe Blu-ray and DVD editions in 2012. While the restored GODZILLA Blu-ray and DVD are still available from Criterion, Classic Media has decided to reissue their GOJIRA DVD set to tie-in with the new movie and to offer a lower priced alternative to fans and retailers. The 2-disc set will be re-released with new packaging as GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. Classic Media is considering repackaging their other Godzilla titles for DVD later this year -- possibly to coincide with the North American home video release of the new film -- but nothing has been decided at this time.
