Source: Shochiku Co., Ltd., Tokyo International Film Festival press release Official Site: kaminotsuki.jp (Japan) Tokyo International Film Festival is pleased to announce that the Japanese film, PALE MOON (???, Kami no Tsuki, 2014), has been selected as the only Japanese film for the 27th TIFF’s International Competition.
PALE MOON is the eagerly anticipated new work from the talented Daihachi Yoshida, director of the award-winning THE KIRISHIMA THING (???????????, Kirishima, Bukatsu Yamerutteyo, 2013). A normal housewife unexpectedly becomes involved in a large embezzlement case in this film adaptation based on the novel by Naoki Prize-winning author Mitsuyo Kakuta, known for The Eighth Day (Yokame no Semi). The protagonist Rika Umezawa is played by Rie Miyazawa, one of Japan’s most accomplished actresses. This collaboration of the author, the director, and the actress Miyazawa represents the pinnacle of modern Japanese filmmaking, and delivers non-stop suspense. Prepare to witness an exquisite and challenging masterwork of cinema. The film will be released by Shochiku Co., Ltd., in Japan on November 15, 2014. Comments Daihachi Yoshida – Director I’m very excited that my film, about a woman who experiences a liberating downfall from following her impulses, has been given this wonderful opportunity to have the whole world turn against its anti-hero. Please witness for yourself just how far the heroine can prolong her freedom. Rie Miyazawa – Lead Actress From the day I received the script until the end of shooting, it took so much energy as running around the world to maintain the mind of this tough woman, “Rika.” However, Yoshida’s strong yet delicate direction gave me the energy to move and expose everything about myself. The powerful story remains in my memory and I hope the film remains in the audience’s. Yoshi Yatabe – Programming Director of International Competition section It was fate when the director, Daihachi Yoshida, who is always careful to portray a character attractively, encountered the actress, Rie Miyazawa. In PALE MOON, Miyazawa performed perfectly in the role of woman who experiences liberation from suppression and downfall. The chemistry between the director and the star created this year’s representative Japanese film. We are thrilled to welcome this film to the Competition section.
