A SCIFI JAPAN EXCLUSIVE
THE GREAT BUDDHA ARRIVAL (大仏廻国, Daibutsu Kokaiku) will have a week-long theatrical run at the large scale cinema Ikebukuro Humax in Tokyo this September 4-10 (this same venue will host the Birth Of Godzilla event in November). While the movie is currently touring international film festivals worldwide, the Ikebukuro Humax screenings will present a new, extended cut “Final Edition” not seen elsewhere.
The Final Edition will include additional footage with two kaiju film legends who recently joined the cast. New scenes featuring legendary ULTRAMAN star Bin Furuya and fan-favorite Godzilla/ kaiju film star Shiro Sano will be filmed in early August for inclusion in THE GREAT BUDDHA ARRIVAL.
Bin Furuya, widely known for portraying the iconic titlular in ULTRAMAN and Ultra Guard agent Amagi in ULTRASEVEN, also had small roles in many of Toho’s sc-fi classics including MOTHRA, ATRAGON, GORATH, KING KONG VS GODZILLA, MOTHRA VS GODZILLA, DOGORA, GHIDORAH THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER, FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD, INVASION OF ASTRO-MONSTER and WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS. In recent years he has appeared in director Minoru Kawasaki’s kaiju comedies MONSTER X STRIKES BACK: ATTACK THE G8 SUMMIT!, EARTH DEFENSE GIRLS P9, EARTH DEFENSE WIDOW and KAIJU MONO.
Shiro Sano is a prolific character actor with an exhaustive filmography. He is best known for his prominent role in GODZILLA 2000, and has appeared in kaiju and fantasy films like TOKYO: THE LAST MEGALOPOLIS, GODZILLA, MOTHRA, AND KING GHIDORAH: GIANT MONSTERS ALL-OUT ATTACK, THE PRINCESS BLADE, GODZILLA FINAL WARS, THE GREAT YOKAI WAR, the 20TH CENTURY BOYS trilogy, GEHARHA: THE DARK AND LONG HAIR MONSTER and WE ARE LITTLE ZOMBIES. He was recently seen in the true-life disaster story FUKUSHIMA 50.
Directed by Hiroto Yokokawa, the movie is a remake of the long-lost 1934 film by Yoshiro Edamasa, which was quite possibly the first-ever daikaiju film from Japan.
