In Japanese with English subtitles Cert. 15 Barbican Film continues their JAPANIMATION series with a special preview of the classic GHOST IN THE SHELL in its newly remastered form GHOST IN THE SHELL 2.0 (Kokaku Kidotai 2.0), with remixed orchestration and the latest CGI technology. The screening will be introduced by anime expert Helen McCarthy (The Anime! Movie Guide, Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation, and founder of the magazine AnimeFX). The sensation caused by the Western release of Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 movie GHOST IN THE SHELL almost equaled that of AKIRA four years earlier. The stunning visuals and soundtrack gave a new dimension to Shirow Masamune’s complex cyberpunk comic. Set in a re-imagined Hong Kong at a time when cyberspace is expanding into human reality, the story follows top cyberwarrior Major Motoko Kusanagi as she hovers on the border of total immersion in the digital world. The film has now been completely remastered, with all the original CGI shots completely re-digitised to enhance their quality. There’s a new 6.1 surround soundtrack, with a new voice actor for the Puppet Master as Yoshiko Sakakibara replaces Iemasa Kayumi, and a remix of Kenji Kawai’s disturbing and evocative score from Oscar-winning sound mixer/editor Randy Thom at Skywalker Sound.
