Arrow Video US is offering SciFi Japan readers a chance to win their new Blu-ray of the Japanese horror classic RINGU (???, 1998) -- aka THE RING. The film is restored from the original negative in glorious high definition and supplemented by a wealth of archival and newly created bonus materials. With RINGU, director Hideo Nakata (DARK WATER) unleashed a chilling tale of technological terror on unsuspecting audiences, which redefined the horror genre, launched the J-Horror boom in the West and introduced a generation of moviegoers to a creepy, dark-haired girl called Sadako. The film’s success spawned a slew of remakes, reimaginations and imitators, but none could quite boast the power of Nakata’s original masterpiece, which melded traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary anxieties about the spread of technology. The RINGU Blu-ray will be available October 29 from Arrow Video US. The movie features a brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, approved by director of photography Junichiro Hayashi, presented in high definition (1080p). Extras include a new audio commentary by film historian David Kalat, featurettes, Sadako’s Video, theatrical trailers and a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork. The suggested retail price is $39.95. Arrow is also releasing the RINGU COLLECTION, a limited edition box set containing RINGU plus Hideo Nakata’s chilling sequel, RINGU 2 (???2 , 1999), the haunting origin story, RINGU 0 (???0 ?????, Ringu 0 B?sudei, 2000) -- as well as the ‘lost’ original sequel, George Iida’s SPIRAL (???, Rasen, 1998), gathered together in glorious high definition and supplemented by a wealth of archival and newly created bonus materials. The RINGU COLLECTION retails for $99.95.
