Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ GODZILLA dropped to tenth place at the domestic box office on a quiet weekend in which the top film (the Kevin Hart comedy THINK LIKE A MAN TOO) earned $30 million. This coming week should see much bigger numbers with the release of TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION. In six weeks GODZILLA has earned nearly $477.5 million worldwide and is on pace to pass the half a billion dollar mark during its theatrical run. The film has now been released in sixty-three territories and finished the weekend in fifth place at the international box office. Toho will open GODZILLA in Japan -- the final major international market -- on July 25th. GODZILLA weekend box office estimates (USD), per data collected as of Sunday, June

Perhaps not surprisingly, the highest profile reissue has been the first GODZILLA (???, 1954); Rialto Pictures has released a new 60th anniversary restoration of the original movie that will have a limited theatrical run through the summer. Another film receiving its due in the spotlight is GODZILLA VS BIOLLANTE (??? VS ?????, Gojira Tai Biorante, 1989), the 17th movie in the Godzilla series. A direct sequel to THE

Rentrak Announces Worldwide Box Office Results for Weekend of June 15, 2014 Source: Rentrak Corporation Official Site: Godzillamovie.com Five weeks into its theatrical run, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ GODZILLA dropped to seventh place at the domestic box office as the newly released sequels 22 JUMP STREET and HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 took the top two spots. But the King of the Monsters once again proved his might by jumping back to the top of the international box office with a massive opening weekend in China. As the second largest theatrical market after North America, China was viewed as key to GODZILLA`s box office success. Warner Bros. gave the film a tremendous push there, releasing it on 9,000 screens across the country. Opening on Friday the 13th, GODZILLA exceeded expectations with a one-day haul of $10.9 million... the highest amount

The Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure EDGE OF TOMORROW took third place with a disappointing $29.1 million, but played well overseas to bring in an additional $82 million internationally. An Interview with Michael Schlesinger on His Unmade Project, GODZILLA REBORN Author: Steve Ryfle Special Thanks to Dan Ross and Garry Hayes A SCIFI JAPAN EXCLUSIVE Legendary’s GODZILLA is just the latest in a series of attempts to adapt the Japanese monster in Hollywood’s image dating back to the 1980s. Most of these projects are well documented: Steve Miner’s proposed stop-motion film, the aborted Jan DeBont project, Yoshimitsu Banno’s proposal for Japanese-American IMAX 3-D co-production, and a sequel to TriStar’s 1998 film, directed by Roland Emmerich, that was to be set in Australia. A little known fact, however, is that an American-made sequel to the Japan-made GODZILLA 2000 MILLENNIUM was briefly floated -- a low-budget (by Hollywood standards) project with man-in-suit effects to be produced by Toho technicians. GODZILLA REBORN was the brainchild of one Michael Schlesinger, who is

Sony Has No Plans For A New Godzilla Film Author: Keith Aiken Source: Sony Pictures Last month the German movie news website Cinetech reported that Sony Pictures was considering a sequel to their American version of GODZILLA (1998) for the summer of 2009. Today, reps from Sony stated that there is nothing to the story, and the studio has no plans to make another Godzilla film. While the end result proved to be a disappointment, Sony initially had high hopes for Godzilla, seeing the monster as a franchise character strong enough to support a series of big budget movies in the United States. In October 1992, the studio came to an agreement with the Toho Motion Picture Co. to produce a trilogy of Godzilla movies, with the first film to be released by Sony subsidiary TriStar Pictures in the summer of 1994. In May 1993 producer

Legendary Pictures Film Revitalizes Franchise, Gives Fans What They’ve Been Waiting For Author: Jim Cirronella Source: Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures Official Site: Godzillamovie.com SPOILER WARNING: This article contains plot details and images from an upcoming movie. Released in 2010, Gareth Edwards’ feature film debut, MONSTERS, contained fresh concepts not often associated with giant monster movies, as well as a scope that belied its micro-budget and fiercely independent origins. Subsequently, the film has sharply divided viewers into two camps: those who have embraced its emphasis on the human characters as they struggle within the context of a monster-infested environment, and those who despise its decidedly-measured approach due to feeling short-changed on monster action. And therein lies the conundrum of bringing a new Godzilla to life for modern audiences: in an era where the push of a button can make almost anybody a

Author: Richard Pusateri Source: Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures Official Site: Godzillamovie.com SPOILER WARNING: This article contains plot details and images from an upcoming movie. Gareth Edwards’ 2014 GODZILLA has at least one unintended consequence; it reinforces my belief that Ishiro Honda’s 1954 GODZILLA was an incredibly stunning artistic achievement. After six decades of technological development, the finest cinematic artisans and craftsmen in the business and an incomprehensibly larger budget, Edwards’ film does not surpass the original Japanese movie’s terrifying commentary. Mr. Honda’s 1954 GODZILLA has a cohesively clear story and artistic statement that still gets me after a few hundred viewings over five decades. This year’s GODZILLA is a fine movie that I enjoyed more than many other recent special effects extravaganzas. In no way do I mean to diminish Edwards’ achievement here when I pledge allegiance to Mr. Honda’s

Movie Stars and Other Celebrities Walk Black and Red Carpet for Media Army Author: Richard Pusateri Source: Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures Official Site: Godzillamovie.com GODZILLA received a giant media event premiere Thursday night at the Dolby Theater on Hollywood Boulevard that was mostly attended by media and movie industry insiders. The press corps appeared to number in the several hundred with an equal number of Warner Bros staffers and security. The only thing missing were fans of the movie. Most of the people I saw on the north side of Hollywood Boulevard appeared to be fans of the actors and other celebrities, tourists, amateur paparazzi and the professional autograph hunters who attend every red carpet event. Ten years earlier, the nearby Chinese Theater was the site of the GODZILLA: FINAL WARS premiere and the ceremony unveiling Godzilla’s Star on the Hollywood Walk

Filmmakers Acknowledge Classic Movie Monsters as Inspiration for New GODZILLA Author: Jim Cirronella Source: Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures Official Site: Godzillamovie.com SPOILER WARNING: This article contains plot details from an upcoming movie. On the morning of Sunday, May 4th in New York City, Warner Bros heralded the return of Godzilla by hosting a press junket in which the upcoming film’s director, producer and leading cast met with journalists to answer questions in a bevy of roundtable interviews. It was big and terrible, and judging by the debris and rubble adorning the hallway at the JW Marriott Essex House near Central Park, the King of Monsters was back in a bigger way than ever thought possible. Affable, young director Gareth Edwards joked about all the attention he’d been receiving: “They keep putting me in rooms, and it’s always full of microphones.”

Director Gareth Edwards and Producer Thomas Tull Answer Questions after 3D IMAX Presentation Author: Richard Pusateri Source: Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures Official Site: Godzillamovie.com Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures shifted promotion of GODZILLA into high gear the first week in May. A series of press screenings began on May 1, with an event at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. The production notes along with more images and video clips were also made public during the first few days of May. The May 1 Chinese Theater screening was especially noteworthy as it was the first IMAX presentation of the 3D movie. The presentation also featured a question and answer session with director Gareth Edwards and producer Thomas Tull. (Attendees of the screening were asked not to publish any description, evaluation or judgment of the movie itself, so watch SciFi Japan after May 10 for reviews.)
