The Criterion Collection is offering SciFi Japan readers a chance to win their new 4K UHD + Blu-ray edition of GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE (ゴジラvsビオランテ, Gojira vs. Biorante, 1989)! The second film in Toho's Heisei Godzilla VS series (1985-95), GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE stands as a high point in the ever-evolving mythology of the King of the Monsters. This time, Godzilla’s foe is one of the series’ most wondrously strange kaiju creations: Biollante — a mutant plant genetically engineered from the cells of a rose, a renegade scientist’s dead daughter, and Godzilla himself.
Criterion's GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE 4K UHD + Blu-ray features a new 4K digital restoration of the film, with 5.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio Japanese soundtrack and a new English subtitle translation. Special features include a new audio commentary with film historian Samm Deighan (Eros + Massacre), a Making-of program from 1993 featuring director Kazuki Omori and special-effects director Koichi Kawakita, among others, a short documentary from 1993 about the Biollante and Super X2 vehicle concepts, deleted special effects, TV spots and trailers, an essay by science-fiction and horror film expert Jim Cirronella (Criterion's GODZILLA: The Showa-Era Films) and a fold-poster by Eric Powell (IDW's Godzilla: King of the Monsters comics).
The GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE 4K UHD + Blu-ray (SRP: $49.95) and Blu-ray (SRP: $39.95) editions will be released on March 18th. They can be purchased from the Criterion Collection, Amazon, and other retailers (both online and in stores).
