The 2004 Japanese science fiction film CASSHERN makes its long-awaited North American DVD debut on October 16, 2007 from Paramount/DreamWorks Home Entertainment. Based on the 1973 Tatsunoko Productions anime series, CASSHERN was written and directed by Kazuaki Kiriya and produced by Shochiku Co., Ltd. The live-action film was shot entirely on a digital backlot, using green screens much like the box office hits SIN CITY and 300 to achieve eye-popping, other-worldly images. CASSHERN is set in a dystopian future in which the planet has been ravaged by a catastrophic Third World War. With the future of the human race in jeopardy, geneticist Dr. Azuma (Akira Terao of AKIRA KUROSAWA’S DREAMS and AEGIS) develops a new technology called “neo-cells” that can repair damaged or diseased tissue, but a lab accident results in the creation of several super strong Neo-Humans. When Burai (Toshiaki Karasawa) leads the Neo-Humans and an army of robots against mankind, Azuma uses the neo-cells on the body of his son Tetsuya (Yusuke Iseya, SUKIYAKI WESTERN: DJANGO)— a soldier killed in the war— to create Casshern, a powerful warrior and the last hope for humanity.
Shortly after its theatrical run in Japan, CASSHERN was acquired for North American release by Go Fish Pictures, the specialty movie division of DreamWorks SKG that also handled GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE. Go Fish originally announced that CASSHERN would get a US theatrical release in 2005 but those plans eventually fell thru. In 2006 DreamWorks was sold to Viacom, owner of Paramount Pictures, and Paramount now handles theatrical and home video distribution for DreamWorks’ films. The CASSHERN DVD includes the never-before-seen director’s cut of the film, presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 TVs with Dolby Digital Japanese 5.1 Surround and English subtitles. The total runtime is 117 minutes. CASSHERN is unrated in the US and rated 14A in Canada for “violence and disturbing content”. The DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $26.99 U.S./$32.99 Canada. For the trailer and additional information, please visit Paramount`s official website.
