GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is set to rampage onto movie theater screens in May 31, 2019, with the next installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse giving fans their second look at this incarnation of Godzilla following the 2014 reboot. KING OF THE MONSTERS brings a stellar cast of actors, including Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown, face to face with a stunning collection of monsters, although fans of Kong will have to wait a bit longer to see Godzilla taking on its most famous foe once again. KING OF THE MONSTERS will see Godzilla joined by an array of monsters acquired from Japanese film company Toho. The gigantic moth-like kaiju Mothra, the titanic dinosaur-esque flying beast Rodan and the three-headed King Ghidorah will no doubt cause some monumental damage in King of the Monsters, and it will be fascinating to see how Godzilla interacts with these fellow beasts. Screen Rant has even suggested that even more titans could be introduced, based on an analysis of movie trailers, which would demonstrate Legendary’s commitment to creating a spectacle on a gigantic scale. While the manner in which GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS introduces the Titans to Hollywood cinema promises to be earth-shattering, both metaphorically and literally given the destructive power of these monsters, many Godzilla and Kong fans alike will already be counting down the days until March 2020. While the Titans will thrill and terrify a new audience thanks to exposure in KING OF THE MONSTERS, they have several decades of sustained popularity ahead before they can match Kong in a level of box office appeal. The original KING KONG was so iconic that any future incarnations of giant apes feel like an homage to the classic character. This was true in the case of 2018 movie RAMPAGE, itself inspired by a video game of the same name. In both forms of media, a giant gorilla named George wreaks havoc and cannot avoid the inevitable comparisons to Kong. The same is true in the slot game Epic Ape available at William Hill Japan, with the titular ape’s appearance across the six reels of the game a tribute to Kong`s universal appeal. THE SIMPSONS similarly took inspiration from Kong in `Treehouse of Horror III`, with Homer filling in for the character. This crossover appeal is why GODZILLA VS KONG inevitably offers another level of glamor and prestige than other MonsterVerse movies, although King of the Monsters promises to set up the 2020 movie in stunning fashion. It will be intriguing to see what sort of state Godzilla is in by the end of the movie following clashes with Titans and humans alike, while Kong is also battle-hardened by 2017’s SKULL ISLAND. The end of SKULL ISLAND teased the introduction of Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah in a post-credits scene, a Marvel-esque reveal that demonstrates the careful planning that has gone into creating a coherent cinematic universe. It will be worth sticking around through the credits of KING OF THE MONSTERS to see how GODZILLA VS KONG is set up. We currently know little about the 2020 movie. There is a conspiracy that places all monsters in jeopardy, possible insights into the Titans’ origins and of course a collision between Godzilla and Kong. KING OF THE MONSTERS promises to be the perfect setup to the clash of two movie legends.
