A SCIFI JAPAN EXCLUSIVE

Toho Co., Ltd. has provided SciFi Japan with press notes and high-res images from their upcoming movie, GODZILLA: CITY ON THE EDGE OF BATTLE (GODZILLA ????????, Gojira Kessen Kidoo Zooshoku Toshi). Featuring animation produced by Polygon Pictures, the second chapter in the anime feature film trilogy will be released nationwide in Japan on May 18 through Toho Animation and Toho`s ODS (Other Digital Stuff) distribution division. INTRODUCTION In 2017, Godzilla trampled over new ground with the birth of a three-part, fully animated movie series, GODZILLA (aka “Anigoji,” a portmanteau of “anime” and “gojira”). Chapter 1, GODZILLA: PLANET OF THE MONSTERS (GODZILLA ????, Gojira Kaijuu Wakusei), was the first-ever 3DCG animation in Godzilla franchise history, and the cinematic experience was met with enormous delight and praise when it was released in November 2017. The “Anigoji” trilogy is set some 20,000 years into the future and depicts an Earth that has been ruled by Godzilla. Humanity finds itself on the verge of extinction, and is fighting for its survival.

The film trilogy has two directors: Kobun Shizuno, who left nothing on the table in directing his vision for GODZILLA: PLANET OF THE MONSTERS while also scoring the number one box office smash last year in Japan with his theatrical release of DETECTIVE CONAN: THE CRIMSON LOVE LETTER (?????? ????????????????????, Meitantei Konan Kara Kurenai no Renka (Kara Kurenai Nora Buretaa), 2017); and Hiroyuki Seshita, another proven talent on the cutting edge of 3D computer graphics who honed his craft with the TV series, KNIGHTS OF SIDONIA: BATTLE FOR PLANET 9 (??????? ??????, Shidonia no Kishi Dai-kyuu Wakusei Seneki, 2015), AJIN: DEMI-HUMAN (??, Ajin, 2016) and BLAME! (???, Buramu, 2017) and is leaving a captivating mark now on film. The story from its inception as an idea straight through to the completed series comes from the creative mind of Gen Urobuchi, best known for PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA (???????????, Maho Shojo Madoka Magika, 2011) and PSYCHO-PASS (?????, Saiko Pasu, 2012-2013), who thoroughly defied viewer expectations with the last scene in PLANET OF THE MONSTERS, and is certain to bring his powerful storytelling ideas to this next iteration, GODZILLA: CITY ON THE EDGE OF BATTLE. The production company is the Japanese 3DCG animation studio, Polygon Pictures. Polygon is a 4-time Emmy award winner for projects including STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, and a daytime Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Animated Program last year with LOST IN OZ. For GODZILLA: CITY ON THE EDGE OF BATTLE, their dynamic depiction of a mind-blowing battle that unfolds at the base of what was once Mt. Fuji is breathtaking. Creating a brave new world soundscape with his bold yet delicate film score is Takayuki Hattori, who composed music for GODZILLA 2000 (???2000 ?????, Gojira Nisen: Mireniamu, 1999) and DORAEMON THE MOVIE: NOBITA’S TREASURE ISLAND (??????? ??????, Eiga Doraemon Nobita no Takarajima, 2018). And returning to perform the theme song is recording artist, XAI, first winner of the "Artist" category in the 8th Toho Cinderella Audition, who sings with a diva like power to complement a Godzilla roar that has shaken the Earth for 20,000 years. This second chapter features the return of a perennial favorite in the Godzilla franchise, “Mecha-Godzilla,” raised to do battle with the largest incarnation ever of the monster, “Godzilla Earth.”

STORY In the early 21st century, the Earth has been ravaged by the monster Godzilla. While the majority of humanity is left behind, a select few escape on the interstellar migrant ship Aratrum, bound for a "promised land", the potentially habitable planet Tau Ceti e. However this migration plan fails, and the remnants of the human race must return to Earth. Due to a distortion in space-time caused by the long-distance sub-space jump, the survivors return to a vastly changed Earth 20,000 years in the future. On this Earth, Haruo Sakaki and his comrades execute the "Anti-Godzilla Tactics" strategy he has been concocting over the past 20 years during their exile that will take the fight to Godzilla. Using the combined forces of the remaining humans, Exifs and Bilusaludians -- humanity`s alien allies -- they manage to defeat Godzilla in a desperate and costly battle to the death.

However, their moment of celebration is fleeting, as the original Godzilla Earth stirs from deep underground. Having continued to grow for 20,000 years, he has evolved into a colossus: 300 meters tall and weighing over 1 million tons. Before the overwhelming destructive power of this immortal giant, Haruo and the other survivors are scattered as they flee for their lives. Haruo is saved by Miana, a young woman from an aboriginal tribe called the Houtua, who seem to be the descendants of those left behind on Earth millennia ago. The Houtua are the first humanoids that the survivors have found on Earth since their return. Haruo also learns that Miana has a twin sister, Maina. The Houtua tell him that their god was also destroyed by Godzilla, and that only its egg remains. All those who challenge or attempt to resist Godzilla will be washed away in a sea of flame. In response to this, Haruo is determined: this is their final chance to wrest the Earth back from Godzilla! Meanwhile, the Bilusaludian commander, Galu-Gu, realizes that the Houtua`s weapons are made from nanometal, an autonomous "smart metal". This is the same substance used in the development of an anti-Godzilla superweapon in a facility at the foot of Mt. Fuji back in the 21st century, but which was destroyed by Godzilla just before the weapon could be brought online in the form of a “Mecha-Godzilla.” This is proof, however, that the facility still exists and may be made operational again...

Haruo Sakaki Gender: Male Classification: Human / Japanese Class: Captain Age: 24 Haruo Sakaki`s parents were killed during one of Godzilla`s attacks, and he has held a strong hatred in his heart for the monster ever since. Haruo is highly intelligent and has a slim but athletic body. Voice Actor: Mamoru Miyano Mamoru Miyano was born June 8, 1983 in Saitama Prefecture. His major works include the anime DEATH NOTE (as Light Yagami), MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM 00 (Setsuna F. Seiei), AJIN: DEMI-HUMAN (Kei Nagai), THE BOY AND THE BEAST (Ichirohiko), KABANERI OF THE IRON FORTRESS (Biba Amatori), THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS (Gilthunder), UTA NO PRINCE-SAMA MAJI LOVE (Tokiya Ichinose) and YURI!!! ON ICE (Jean-Jacques Leroy). He has been the voice of Ultraman Zero since the character`s introduction in MEGA MONSTER BATTLE ULTRA GALAXY THE MOVIE (?????? ???????? ? Metphies Gender: Male Classification: Exif Class: Civilian Priest and Lieutenant Colonel Age: 50 An Exif alien, Metphies is an archbishop in the religious class of his race, and an ally of Haruo. He is a moral being who respects others, and is known for his soft smile and gentle tone. The Exifs are a long-lived race, and Metphies has an appearance equivalent to a 25 year-old human. Voice Actor: Takahiro Sakurai Takahiro Sakurai was born June 13, 1974 in Aichi prefecture. Hiroyuki Seshita "I’m thrilled to collaborate with two very talented colleagues, Mr. Gen Urobuchi and Director Kobun Shizuno to bring to life a unique vision of a universal human drama set in an epic world.” Hiroyuki Seshita was born in 1967 and joined Links in 1989. ? Takayuki Hattori "18 years after GODZILLA 2000, I am glad to be back in the world of the new Godzilla which was opened by SHIN GODZILLA. This is the first animated film in the history of Godzilla, and I am excited to be able to take on the challenge while at the same time I feel it is a very big mission. I think this will be a Godzilla movie that you can`t possibly imagine. I expressed in music my own feelings about the characters and the overwhelming presence of Godzilla created by the two directors, Mr. Shizuno and Mr. Seshita." After graduating from the Conservatoire de Paris and returning to Japan in 1988, Takayuki Hattori arranged albums and concerts for a wide range of artists from pop (Masaharu Fukuyama, Ringo Sheena, Masayoshi Yamazaki, JAM Project, etc) to classical (Yumiko Samejima, etc).
