Worldwide Box Office Results for Weekend of July 27, 2014 Source: Rentrak Corporation, Warner Bros. Entertainment Official Site: Godzillamovie.com Special Thanks to Paul Dergarabedian and Tom Molter This past week offered several landmarks for Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ GODZILLA. On Monday, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced that the film would be available on Blu-ray and DVD starting September 16th. Toho opened the film in Japanese theaters on Friday. And on Saturday, Legendary revealed that director Gareth Edwards would return for sequels featuring Godzilla`s most popular Toho co-stars: Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah. On the box office front, GODZILLA dominated Japan this weekend at #1 with an outstanding 3 day projected gross of ¥704,000,000 (Approximately $6.95 million US). The film was screened in both 2D and 3D with English subtitled or Japanese dubbed options, drawing over 481,000 admissions from 427 Toho Cinemas screens. The early numbers surpass the opening weekend haul of Walt Disney`s MALEFICENT, which had year`s best opening for a live-action film in Japan with ?691,000,000 (Approximately $6,777,176 US) from 643 screens. When comparing Saturday/Sunday figures with other recent sci-fi/monster movies, GODZILLA`s results are on par with TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (2011), outperform the opening weekend grosses for TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN (2009), RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014), WORLD WAR Z (2014) and KING KONG (2005) and more than double the numbers for PACIFIC RIM (2013). With these fantastic results, GODZILLA is just shy of $300 million internationally and poised to cross the $500 million worldwide milestone on Monday. SciFi Japan will update with confirmed numbers early this week once final Japanese and domestic weekend box office totals are available. GODZILLA weekend box office estimates (USD), per data collected as of Sunday, July 27, 2014... Weekend BO Estimate Domestic: $297,227 (Final Numbers TBA) International: $6,950,000 Weekend Release Cume Worldwide: $498,317,206 International: $299,000,000 Domestic: $199,317,206 (Final Numbers TBA)
